Winning any prize from the lottery can be exciting. A Virginia man was more than happy with his $600 prize but was in for a treat when that turned into $1 million.
Jose Flores Velasquez from Annandale, Virginia, picked up a 20X the Money scratch-off ticket from a Safeway store in the area when he stopped to buy some soft drinks. Most of the time, scratch-off tickets are a cheap way to buy a lottery ticket but they don’t often have huge payouts.
When he scratched the ticket, Velasquez thought he had won $600. To receive his cash prize, he took the ticket to the Virginia Lottery’s customer service center in Woodbridge. To his surprise, employees at the center looked over his ticket and informed him it was worth a whopping $1 million instead of the $600 he came to collect.
Velasquez had the choice of either taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option. He chose the cash option and received $759,878 before taxes. Velasquez plans on using the prize money to take care of his family and potentially start his own business.
The store also receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
