Apartment Complex Built Next to Federal Prison Causes Tension

It doesn’t seem like building an apartment complex next to a federal prison was a good idea after all. Residents have now started to complain about inmates from the prison beside a Miami apartment building gawking at sunbathing women.

The new downtown Miami apartment complex is directly beside a federal prison and to make matters worse, its outdoor pool is in full view of many inmates. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that many of the inmates were quite happy to learn they had a pool surrounded by lounging residents to stare at.

Apparently, the inmates shouted and whistled at several women in bikinis. One was even captured on camera cupping a hand around his mouth in order to amplify his yells. Those living in the apartment began complaining about disturbances caused by the prisoners last week.

The Federal Detention Center is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and houses around 1,100 inmates, both male and female. It has been open since around 1995 while the apartment complex opened in 2021.

A spokesperson for the prison said in a statement: “While for safety and security reasons, we do not discuss internal guidance or security practices, we can tell you the issue presented in the video is under investigation and we are actively pursuing a solution that both addresses the concern of the public and is in accordance with American Correctional Association guidelines.”
