Spices are often reserved for the kitchen but they have recently found their way into the art world. An artist from British Columbia, Canada, earned a Guinness World Record when she used different spices to paint a butterfly measuring 908.39 square feet.
Preethi Vijay of Surrey, British Columbia, said that she used a combination of turmeric, paprika and clove to complete her artwork, which Guinness World Records has confirmed to be the world’s largest spice painting.
The giant cloth used for Vijay’s record-breaking spice painting was sourced right from her hometown of Chennai, India. Her paint was created from a mixture of 11 pounds of spices.
Vijay is a self-taught artist who used to work as a software engineer. She now sells her works on social media and often works using natural materials.
“I love to work with coffee,” Vijay said. “Then I suddenly had this idea to work with spices like turmeric, paprika — vibrant colors.”
