A Belgium competition assessed one key criterion: can the event participants level up to be as annoying as the screeching seagull? Seabird enthusiasts took up the challenge and participated in the 2023 European Gull Screeching Championship to screech their way to victory. The human with the strongest vocal abilities will be crowned the champion.
Five judges declared this year’s champion to be Jarmo Slutter from the Netherlands. Slutter, who wore seagull attire for his performance, got encouragement from his friends to join the competition after they heard his killer imitation of the seagull call.
The competition launched five years ago with humble beginnings as a local event then expanded to be a Europe-wide competition. This year’s competition tested the audience’s eardrums with seagull imitators going strong with their best screeches.
The purpose of the contest is to educate people about seagulls and replicate the blissful sound of the sea where these animals are found in abundance.
Event planners believe this fun-spirited competition will enable people to relive pleasant memories. While they have good intentions, not everyone can associate good memories with these birds. For anyone that’s ever had the bird’s droppings land on their heads, we might have to resurface some of that trauma with this competition.
