Chuck E. Cheese Still Uses Floppy Discs to Control Animatronic Creatures

As if it wasn’t clear by visiting their establishments but Chuck E. Cheese restaurants are stuck in the past. According to one employee, the performing animatronic creatures used to entertain children still run on floppy discs.

A TikTok recently went viral of a Chuck E. Cheese employee showing off a winter 2023 floppy disk that was sent to their location from corporate headquarters. In the video, the employee also shows himself loading the disc into a large computer server in order to relay the data for the latest routine for the robots.

Chuck E. Cheese was launched in 1977 and only around 50 or so Chuck E. Cheese locations around the world still have the old animatronics that use the floppy discs, which are actually extremely reliable. The remaining restaurants will be phasing them out eventually, with no timeline in sight.

Chuck E. Cheese is not the only business still holding onto technology from the past. Until 2019, the U.S. nuclear weapons program ran on floppy discs and apparently, the San Francisco public transit system also still relies on them.
