Even giant inflatable ducks can have a mind of their own. A gigantic rubber duck made its return to a Maine harbor but broke free from its moorings.
The inflatable object appeared in Belfast Harbor in 2021 with the word “Joy” written across its front. The apparent art project returned again near the end of October 2022, this time with “Greater Joy” inscribed on its chest.
Authorities with the Belfast Harbor Officer confirmed that the inflatable duck did break free from its location because of high winds. “We actually went out and grabbed it with the boat but the lines all broke on it,” a harbor official said. “It was just way too windy. We couldn’t pull it back in.”
The object floated out of the harbor and many locals caught sight of the duck on the move. Witnesses from the You Know You Love Belfast If….. Facebook community said that the duck drifted about 20 miles to the coast of Blue Hill, Maine.
It’s unclear about the duck’s current whereabouts. The origins of the duck also remain a mystery.
