Man Bitten by Alligator After Mistaking It for Dog

A man strolling around a Florida motel late at night got an unexpected surprise when he mistakenly took a dark shape for a dog. Instead, what the man found was a seven-foot alligator attached to his leg.

The 49-year-old victim was staying at the Warm Mineral Springs Motel in North Port, Florida. At around 12:30 a.m., the man was outside when he thought he noticed a dog on a long leash, which is why he didn’t move out of the way. It was actually an alligator that managed to rip a chunk of his muscle tissue from the man’s leg.

A deputy was near the motel on a different call “when he heard the man yelling that he had been bitten.” The officer called for assistance to help with the situation. “He (the victim) stated he was walking around the outside area of the motel when he noticed a dark figure moving along the bushes on the shell path,” the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputy was able to capture the alligator himself and held onto it until a trapper arrived. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is currently investigating the incident and reported that the alligator had been removed from the property.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
