Mass Nude Photo Staged for Skin Cancer Awareness

Some people are comfortable enough in their own skin to show off their bodies for a good cause. Thousands of people stripped for a mass nude photo on an Australian beach to raise awareness for skin cancer.

Sydney, Australia’s Bondi Beach was the site for the nude gathering that was directed and photographed by U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick. Tunick is known for staging several mass nude photoshoots at other world landmarks.

Using a megaphone at his disposal, Tunick had the group of 2,500 attendees organize themselves into a number of different poses on the beach before many decided to skinny dip in the ocean.

The New York-based artist looked to share a more meaningful creation with his latest work, collaborating with a charity on the naked art installation in a bid to raise awareness about melanoma, Australia’s fourth most common form of cancer.

“We have an opportunity to raise awareness about skin checks and I’m honoured… to come here, make my art and just celebrate the body and protection,” Tunick said.

It’s estimated by the federal government that in 2022, more than 17,000 new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in Australia. More than 1,200 Australians are expected to die from the disease.
