Mysterious Illness Causes 1,000 Students to Call in Sick

With a change in the seasons, many can catch the flu or other seasonal illnesses. Although that normally is the case, an illness at a Virginia high school has left authorities scratching their heads after 1,000 students called in sick.

Parents from Stafford High School were sent a letter alerting them of an “illness outbreak” that has taken hold of the school. Out of the 2,600 students that attend the high school, around 1,000 didn’t show up to class and reported flu-like symptoms and stomach pains.

“We are currently investigating the symptoms and are working with the health department to identify the root cause of the illness,” Principal Allen Hicks said in the letter.

Hicks mentioned that the school did not anticipate closing the building at all because of the mystery illness. Instead, students will be provided with “ample time” to make up any missed work once they return to school.

Stafford’s custodial staff are also scheduled to complete an “extensive and thorough” wipe-down of the entire building in hopes that this move is enough to eliminate the problem.

The Rappahannock Area Health District is currently investigating the outbreak. It’s also been reported that Stafford County Public Schools have canceled upcoming athletics and extracurricular activities.
