Railway Track Passes Through Soccer Stadium

It’s not every day that you see a railway pass directly through a soccer stadium. Slovakian amateur football club TJ Tatran Cierny Balog has one of the most unique stadiums in the world, as steam engines regularly run straight through it.

Cierny Balog is a small Slovakian town of just over 5,000 people but has recently become a tourist destination just to see its soccer stadium. Back in 2015, a video of a train passing through the stadium went viral with many thinking it was CGI. Surprisingly, the stadium actually has tracks positioned between the field and grandstand, with trains from the Čiernohronska Railway passing through all summer long.

Cierny Balog stadium was built during the 1980s when the railway was no longer in use. For the most part, over the next ten years, the tracks sat dormant. In the 1990s, a group of Slovakian enthusiasts decided to repair the train tracks to reopen them as a heritage railway for tourists.

Tourists can purchase tickets for the 17-kilometer trip between Chvatimech and Vydrovo. During the ride, passing by the Lower Tatras mountains and the Cierny Balog stadium are definite highlights.

It’s a unique experience to be able to watch a soccer game while a steam train rolls through the stadium. Oftentimes, players try to ignore the train and continue to focus on the game. Although distracting, Cierny Balog is believed to be the only stadium in the world with an active railway passing through it, which only adds to its one-of-a-kind experience.
