Reporter Robbed on Live TV While Covering World Cup

The FIFA World Cup only comes around every four years and is a way to bring people from all around the world together, cheering for a sport they love. Apparently, some people are looking for a little extra when it comes to the worldwide event.

A reporter was broadcasting live from Qatar when she was robbed on-site by a thief who took her wallet and other important items unsuspectedly. Argentinian reporter Dominique Metzger was in the Corniche area of Doha when items like documents and money were stolen from her handbag.

As any normal person would, Metzger reported the incident to the local police but was shocked by their response. “I went to the station and that was when the cultural differences began,” she said when explaining her encounter with the police.

She added: “The policewoman said to me, ‘We have high-tech cameras everywhere and we are going to locate him [the thief] with face detection. What do you want the justice system to do when we find him?’

Surprised by the comment, the journalist asked the officer for some clarification, to which they responded: “What justice do you want? What sentence do you want us to give him? Do you want him to be sentenced to five years in prison? Do you want him to be deported?”

Metzger replied that she only wanted her belongings back and did not wish to decide the thief’s sentence. This robbery only adds to the question of why Qatar was selected to host the world cup in the first place as many have seen it as a controversial decision.
