Ukrainian Soldier Gets Surgery to Remove Grenade

Surgeons were on their toes while they performed surgery on a Ukrainian soldier to remove an unexploded grenade underneath his heart. The grenade was a result of a battle in Bakhmut, Donbas, Ukraine. Fortunately, rescuing this man didn’t result in any explosions with more casualties.

The patient went through a successful surgery and is recovering in a stable condition. He will be going through a period of rehabilitation.

Hanna Maliar, Ukraine’s deputy minister of defence, made an announcement informing the public that two combat engineers stabilized the explosive while the surgeons went through the task of safely removing it.

Maliar said: “Military doctors conducted an operation to remove a VOG grenade, which did not break, from the body of the soldier.”

It was a high-risk surgery as “the grenade could detonate at any moment.”

Anton Gerashchenko, Ukraine’s internal affairs ministerial adviser, said the complicated surgery would “go down in medical textbooks.”

He added: “There have never been such operations in the practice of our doctors. Similar was during the war in Afghanistan. About the current patient, I can say that he was born in 1994, now he is sent for rehabilitation, his condition is stable. I think this case will go down in medical textbooks.”

It’s not just soldiers that risk their lives for the greater good, surgeons go through high-risk job activities to help the public.
