Van Disappears in the Blink of an Eye

It’s not often that a large vehicle like a van can just disappear into thin air. In New York City, a sinkhole was the reason that a van was swallowed up as if it were a toy car.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEC) reported that personnel responded when the sinkhole opened up on Radcliff Avenue in the Morris Park area. Video of the incident was released, which showed the sinkhole opening up in the street and eventually swallowing the van. Another vehicle was also left teetering on the edge of the pavement and sinkhole opening.

The van’s owner, Antonio Papadoboulos, was in for a surprise when he saw the state of his vehicle. Papadoboulos has no plans to get the vehicle repaired. “I’m just going to buy a new one,” he said.

The DEC said personnel were on the scene the next day to fill in the hole after the van was hoisted out. This block of the Bronx neighborhood will likely be closed for about a week for ongoing repairs.

Officials said the vehicles were unoccupied and there were no injuries reported. Authorities also mentioned that the hot weather was not the reason for the sinkhole and that cause is currently under investigation.
