Viral TikTok trends aren’t often the best thing to follow. Health officials in Israel are warning the public about the sugar content of Fruit Roll-Ups after a viral video has led to the snacks being smuggled into the country.
Influencer Golnar Ghavami started off the trend by posting a video on TikTok showing her special sweet treat. In the video, she can be seen wrapping a spoonful of ice cream in a Fruit Roll-Up and eating it was a crunch.
Since that video took off, imitators have arisen and the sugary sweets have started flying off the shelves, leaving some stores without any stock. This has also led to some trying to smuggle the snacks in from the United States.
The Israeli Tax Authority posted on Facebook about the uptick in cases. Officials said that the reason people have been bringing the snacks from the United States is because they are a lot cheaper. In the U.S., a box of 72 Fruit Roll-Ups can be bought for about $27, whereas in Israel a single Fruit Roll-Up can be sold on the black market for as much as $6.
Officials have confiscated multiple people’s luggage, as well as at least 10 packages intercepted in the mail but they’re not the only department affected by this craze. The Israeli Ministry of Health to issue a warning about the high sugar content of Fruit Roll-Ups paired with ice cream.
“Glucose, corn syrup and dry corn syrup are all sugar — a lot of different types of sugar,” the ministry said. They also made sure to share a recipe for a healthier substitute: cucumber rolls.
