Woman Takes Dog on Monthly Dates

Treating your dog every once and a while is always good but it gets a little weird when dinner for one turns into dinner for two.

Helen Hallford loves to take her pup Tommy to dinners at her local pub in Warwickshire. The fifty-three-year-old isn’t shy about it either, especially since she’s become lonelier since separating from her husband.

“I love going out with him. He is my absolute favourite date. I know I’m a bit mad. The first time we went out together, it was the best thing ever,” she said.

On New Year’s Eve in 2019, Hallford took Tommy to stay at a hotel in Bournemouth together. Although she loves spending time with her pup, Hallford admits it’s not easy. She receives quite a bit of criticism for her choices but doesn’t let them get her down.

“I told them I wanted to dine with my dog and they put me in a separate room. We had a candlelit dinner with seven courses and our own waiter. Once everyone had finished eating, we joined the restaurant and slow danced together in front of the band,” Hallford said.

The pair’s go-to meal? Steak and kidney pie with mashed potato, which needs to be cut up in small pieces for Tommy since he doesn’t have many teeth.

It’s not only special occasions that are reserved for nights out. “We try to get out two or three times a month, and then we go out to the local pub for Valentine’s Day and my birthday,” Hallford said.

Tommy has taken the pressure off of Hallford so she doesn’t have to dine alone. Oftentimes, she’s able to have great conversations with people at dinner because they love to comment on Tommy’s small size. He’s around 7.8 inches and only weighs 1.3 kilograms.
