World’s Most Expensive Ice Cream Sells for $6,700

While some people have quite a taste for luxury, this might be going a bit too far. A Japanese luxury ice cream brand recently set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s most expensive ice cream priced at a whopping $6,700 per portion.

On April 25, 2023, a Guinness World Records representative certified the world record attempt. The Japanese luxury ice cream brand Cellato introduced Byakuya, a protein-rich ice cream that has now been deemed the most expensive in the world.

The price point is determined by the ingredients used, which includes a velvety base made with milk, two types of cheese, egg yolks and sake leek. It’s also topped with Parmigiano cheese, white truffle, truffle oil and gold leaf. What really notches the ice cream over the edge are the white truffles used. They come special from Alba, Italy, and are part of a high-quality batch priced at $14,900.

For those not looking to spend $6,700 on the ice cream, the “highest grade” gelato apparently has a faint sweetness, complex taste and a luxuriously smooth texture. It even comes packaged in a fancy black box and includes a hand-made metal spoon created by Takeuchi craftsmen in Fushimi, Kyoto, using techniques and materials used in the construction of temples and shrines. That’s some pretty ritzy stuff.

While the Byakuya ice cream doesn’t have an expiration date, Cellato recommends eating the 130-milliliter pint within 10 days in order to get the most out of the taste and texture of the ice cream.
