“World’s Ugliest Dog” Crowned

Some pups are rewarded for being cute while others are honored for being downright ugly. The annual crowning of the “World’s Ugliest Dog” took place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. The event returned for the first time in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Happy Face was adopted by Janeda Banelly from an animal shelter in Arizona where they gave her a warning about the pup.

“I was warned [he] could be inbred because he was so ugly. The shelter staff tried to prepare me for what I was about to see,” Banelly said. She threw caution to the wind and decided to adopt the then 17-year-old dog, saying that he “needed a second chance and deserved to be loved.”

It’s unclear as to what breed Mr. Happy Face because the shelter wasn’t expecting him to live long after his adoption. Banelly has made sure the dog has been showered with love since he came into her life.

According to Banelly, some of Mr. Happy Face’s favorite hobbies include “being fearlessly adorable,” invoking his “elder privilege” over other pets in the household and “eating stinky things.” Sounds like he’s finding his new life and recent big win just fine.
