Bear Breaks Into Car to Eat Leftovers

If a bear smells food, you better watch out. The animals tend to put all of their efforts into capturing that food to fill their bellies, no matter the cost.

A bear broke into a car in British Columbia, Canada, and ended up destroying the car door in the process of sneaking out some leftovers from the owner’s yummy lunch.

Stefan Halas had his car parked outside of his Maple Ridge home when the curious and rather hungry bear took notice. Some leftover food was enough for the bear to make its move and destroy the car in the process.

Black bears across North America are readying themselves for hibernation, which means they consume more calories than usual. The average amount of calories consumed in a day is about 20,000 in preparation for hibernation.

“There was a window on the ground and paw prints on the door,” Halas said. “We knew instantly it must have been a bear. It kind of turned my car into a pop can and crushed it.” The bear must have clearly been familiar with how to operate the handles of unlocked vehicles.

Although Halas’ car was badly damaged, the animal had other targets on the street as well. “All of our car doors were open and our neighbor’s car doors were open too,” Halas’ mother, Anne Taylor, said.

The family now knows to lock their doors so something like this doesn’t happen again. At least the bear wasn’t able to steal the car outright but others might get a similar idea.
