Chicken With Missing Toes Sent More Than 60 Pairs of Tiny Shoes

This isn’t a story you hear every day. A chicken with missing toes was sent more than 60 pairs of shoes to help him walk.

Meesh Davignon, who has a number of other animals such as guinea pigs, chickens, dogs and a cat, heard about a disabled chicken who needed a family around two years ago. The chicken’s owner was moving and was trying to place the chicken in a loving home.

“She had a little Malaysian Serama chicken that had lost his toes to scaly leg mites,” said Davignon. These leg mites are microscopic arachnids that can live beneath the scales of a chicken’s lower legs and feet and cause serious damage.

Since the small chicken was missing most of his toes and wobbled around on the nubs of his feet, Davignon decided to name him Nubz. She took the seven-inch-tall bird home to her Escondido, California, residence where she works as a dog trainer.

As the new member of her family was getting used to his new home, the 30-year-old decided to see what she could do about his feet. Nubz was able to walk around on grass but he had difficulty walking on dirt and gravel.

“He has very thin skin because of the mite damage, so he hobbled around and fell a lot,” she said.

A few days after bringing Nubz home, she remembered that her Chihuahua, Rex, had a tiny pair of dog slippers decorated with reindeer that he had never worn. She decided to tuck Nubz’s feet inside the slippers and try to get him to walk to her.

It was a success and since then, Nubz has gotten used to the little shoes. After posting videos of the bird online, others wanted to add to Nubz’s shoe wardrobe, which is when Davignon started receiving packages in the mail of dozens of pairs of tiny boots and shoes.

Nubz’s footwear is always changed with Davignon able to choose between 64 different pairs like fleecy booties, tennis shoes, blue suede shoes, beach sandals, dinosaur claw boots and other kicks in a rainbow of hues.

“Probably his favorite pair is his dark blue shoes that look like Ugg boots,” Davignon said. “He’s pretty fast in those and seems to really enjoy wearing them.”
