Flight Rerouted After Maggots Fall From Overhead Bin

The last thing you want to see on a plane is a bug. A flight from the Netherlands to the United States had to be rerouted after maggots fell out of an overhead bag onto a passenger.

The flight was only an hour into its nearly nine-hour journey headed from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, on February 13, 2024, when the creepy crawlies landed on a passenger. After an inspection was done of the overhead bin, the flight crew found an “improperly packed carry-on bag” that contained rotten fish, wrapped in newspaper.

According to a statement from Delta, “the aircraft returned to the gate and passengers were placed on the next available flight.” Philip Schotte, a passenger on the flight, said that the woman was freaking out over the bugs, “trying to kind of fight off these maggots.”

“They found out that there was a rotten fish in there,” Schotte said. “I did see everyone’s reaction to the bag being opened, which was just an immediate pinching of the nose.”
