Halloween Candy Stock Up Earns Man $1 Million Prize

Stocking up on some candy for Halloween can often be left to the last minute. A man’s late trip to a store won him a $1 million Powerball prize.

The Maryland man explained to Maryland Lottery officials that he had been making a stop at the Giant store in Bowie because he needed to buy some Halloween sweets before the holiday. The store wouldn’t have been his first choice but the man had no other option for a quick trip.

“I wasn’t actually going to go to Giant,” the 58-year-old said, “but I was in a hurry to get home.”

The man opted for purchasing 10 quick-pick tickets for the October 29, 2022, Powerball drawing while at the store. He didn’t check his tickets until the next morning when he discovered that the $800 million jackpot hadn’t been won yet. That’s when he learned he earned the $1 million prize.

“It was on the last of the 10 tickets,” he said. “I looked it up and this thing is saying $1 million!”

The player was in such disbelief over the win that he had his brother double-check the ticket to confirm the win. After confirming the $1 million win, the man said he felt a sense of relief. “I’m just thankful,” he said.

As a caregiver to his father, the winner plans to use his prize money to continue to care for the elderly man.
