In a controversial tweet, Tampax left the jaws open of fellow users with their viral tweet that evokes strong reactions of disgust and rage. Although the company brands itself as empowering women and normalizing taboo conversations revolving around periods, the company shocked the crowd when it wrote: “You’re in their DMs. We’re in them. We are not the same.”
While humor is usually a good buffer in preventing strong reactions during the discussion of taboo topics, this joke didn’t get positive reactions. The message is directed to the male crowd in a contemptuous tone and there’s a sexual meaning that horrifies the target audience.
For instance, how would a parent feel reading this tweet? Suddenly, it’s not only about protecting their kids from sketchy boys. They would feel squirmy buying tampons for their teen.
A mother commented on this post: “I have 13 & 11-year-old girls. You’ll never be ‘in them.’ I’ll make damn sure that every mum of every girl I know hears why you shouldn’t be ‘in them’ either. My eldest & her mates were already grossed out by the creepy bloke you call a brand ambassador. Misogynistic creeps.”
Another wrote: “Some girls start their period at age 8 or 9. You’re talking about little girls — as well as fully grown women who require respect in menstruation. Your tweet is predatory, sexual and pedophilic.”
Apparently, women shove garbage up sensitive areas, one user added: “Your products are garbage anyway. Ineffective applicators, absorbency levels that are nowhere near what you claim, strings that break.”
This tweet was not written by a twisted kid who lives in his parent’s basement. Tampax is owned by Proctor & Gamble, a multinational consumer goods corporation generating billions of dollars in sales. The least they could do is hire a better marketing team. A person pointed out: “Yikes! This is BEYOND inappropriate from a corporation.”
