World’s Biggest Crocheted Christmas Tree Built in Portugal

Christmas trees aren’t always made out of branches. Sometimes rolls of yarn are enough to send crowds speechless in disbelief and wonder. Organizers of a crochet project in Portugal have been presented with a Guinness World Record for their crocheted Christmas tree. The giant crochet has reached a height of more than 55 feet and will require viewers to strain their necks to get a good look.

The Associação de Moradores Unidos da Apelação, a residents’ group in Loures, Lisbon, launched the project started as a way to keep elderly residents entertained during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The project quickly picked up momentum and it grew to include 70 people from ages 11 to 88. People gather around for their love of crochet and community.

“We never thought this project would be so successful. We initially thought of a small tree measuring three to four meters and then, as we realized that there would be many people involved, we advanced to a 17-meter [55.7-foot] tree and entered it in the Guinness Book of Records,” project coordinator Catarina Canelas.

When people collaborate in harmony with their skills, they are capable of hitting milestones and achievements that are impossible to do alone.
