Berlin Officials Dismiss Lioness Alarm After No Visible Threat

Berlin authorities sent out an alert stating that there is a potential animal threat to people after a dangerous animal was spotted in the area. Officials later followed up saying there is no longer a lioness in the vicinity and stopped the search.

Experts examined the video of the wild animal and declared that it was likely a wild boar.

Police first heard of the animal in Kleinmachnow, Germany, after residents reported a large cat chasing a wild boar. There were videos sent to the authorities that managed to capture the chase.

After that video, police saw the wild animal with their own eyes and stated that it was a lioness. Police searched far and wide yet they couldn’t get a hold of the lioness, they only managed to find a family of wild boars.

Experts later examined the video and compared the animal in the video with the body structure of a lioness. The team concluded that “this isn’t a lioness or a wild animal” and that the animal is most likely a wild board, stating that the rounded back and thick legs of the animal seen in the video did not resemble a lioness.

“We will return to the usual vigilant program and we think there is no acute danger for Kleinmachnow or for the south of Berlin,” the mayor said.

It’s business as usual after an extensive search and lots of money down the drain. Grubert defended the 36-hour deployment with helicopters, drones and infrared cameras as appropriate given the situation. The vets and hunters can go back to more pressing concerns.

“The danger of a wild animal in Kleinmachnow justifies the deployment,” he said, adding that he would act the same way “if I were in the situation today.”
