The Velez family from Cape Coral, Florida, fished out a newspaper machine that’s been below the water for some time now. The couple was confused about the mystery object, and recently they were able to get the mystery solved by fishing it out of the water.
The couple has lived in the home since 2019 and shortly after moving in, they found an object resting in the middle of the canal behind their house. “Always wondered what it could be,” said Kim Velez. “Never really figured out what it was. Thought it would be a concrete block or some side, like, a piece of a wall. That was probably our best guess.”
They continued with the guessing game until the weather piqued their interest even more about the item.
Due to low levels of rain, the canal levels dropped in Cape Coral. The couple witnessed light shining on something they’ve never seen before.
“We saw that, hey, there’s more to it. I think there’s some writing on it. And then, we were like, ‘there’s our chance,'” Velez said. “Now we can lift it out. My husband went into the canal, got an anchor, hooked it underneath the whole box and then pulled it towards our dock.”
It wasn’t a quick task to get the object out of the water since half of their day was spent battling it out with the machine. “It was much heavier than we thought or had anticipated,” Velez said. “Once we lifted it out of the water and we could see that the sticker said News-Press.”
The antique newspaper box could be almost 15 years old and the price can give a clue at the age of the machine. “$0.75 for a newspaper daily and $1.50 for the Sunday newspaper,” Velez said.
Velez was surprised to stumble across the newspaper machine on the streets rather than seeing it in a museum. Although the couple doesn’t have a use for the stinky newspaper box, they were proud to help with cleaning up the environment.
“This is nature, our home. We should keep it clean,” Velez said.
