Illegal Pot Dispensary Opened in Restaurant’s Parking Lot

For a drug seller, people working in a drug rehab facility shouldn’t be the target customers.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office arrested John Lomio, a 36-year-old Yulan man, after he ran an illegal marijuana dispensary in the parking lot at the River’s Edge, in the Town of Highland.

Deputies were notified by witnesses after Lomio attempted to sell pot to workers in a nearby garden. Lomio was ignorant of the fact that these were people who work at a drug rehab facility.

Only licensed facilities in New York are able to sell cannabis, so Lomio’s setup was illegal.

The workers immediately complained to the sheriff’s office, and Undersheriff Eric Chaboty conducted undercover surveillance. During a search of Lomio’s residence and car, investigators retrieved pot, hallucinogenic and cash.

Highland Town Supervisor Jeff Haas said they have zero tolerance for illegal drug stores. “The Town of Highland is not a place for those who seek to commit quality of life crimes or peddle illegal and illicit substances to its residents and visitors,” Haas said.

Sheriff Mike Schiff shared a cautionary warning: “If you think this is the place to be breaking the law in that manner and dispensing drugs to possibly children, and even adults that shouldn’t be having this stuff, you will find a problem here.”
