Ministry of Defence Accidentally Sends Email to Russia’s Ally

The Ministry of Defence shared on Twitter that they have conducted an investigation after emails containing confidential information were sent to a close ally of Russia by mistake.

The emails were supposed to go to the U.S. military, which uses the domain name “.mil”. However, they left out the letter “i” so the emails ended up in the inbox of the West African nation of Mali.

The Ministry of Defence claims fewer than 20 emails were sent to the wrong domain and that there has been “no breach of operational security or disclosure of technical data.”

A Ministry of Defence representative said: “We have opened an investigation after a small number of emails were mistakenly forwarded to an incorrect email domain.”

They also added: “The MoD constantly reviews its processes and is currently undertaking a programme of work to improve information management, data loss prevention, and the control of sensitive information.”

This isn’t the first time this typo occurred; a few weeks prior to this incident, millions of US military emails had also been sent to Mali due to the same typing error. In a few of those emails, there was sensitive information such as passwords, medical records and the itineraries of high-ranking officers.
