285-Year-Old Lemon Auctioned Off for $1,780

Who knew an old piece of fruit could cost so much? A 285-year-old lemon found in the back of an old cabinet drawer was auctioned for a whopping $1,780.

Brettells Auctioneers in Shropshire, England, said that a 19-century cabinet was originally brought to the auction house by a family who said it had belonged to a deceased uncle. A specialist was taking photos of the cabinet to list for sale when the lemon was discovered in the back of one of the drawers.

The fruit was visibly old and had a message inscribed that read: “Given By Mr P Lu Franchini Nov 4 1739 to Miss E Baxter.”

The auction house decided to sell the aged lemon. To much surprise, it fetched a huge $1,780 at auction. Meanwhile, the cabinet only sold for $40.
