Alligator Spotted in Unusual Location

In northern states across the U.S., it’s not uncommon for wildlife officials to assist with moving moose, mountain lions or black bears out of local communities. In an unlikely situation, Idaho Fish and Game officials were called when a small alligator was discovered in a rural neighborhood.

The 3.5-foot alligator is an unusual sighting for the area. It was found hiding in the brush by a New Plymouth resident who was walking their dog. These creatures are commonly found in the coastal wetlands of the southeastern United States but are not native to Idaho.

Southwest Region spokesperson Brian Pearson said that the resident put the alligator in a nearby horse trailer until Idaho Fish and Game conservation officers could pick it up. The animal is currently in captivity for now but unless the owner is located, it will most likely be euthanized or given to a licensed facility.

Idaho Fish and Game posted on social media about the incident and asked members of the public to call the department if they have any information about the alligator’s origins.
