Building Transformed Into Real-Life “Donkey Kong” Level

Iconic arcade games look so fun to play but what would you do if you could attempt the level in real life? A New Hampshire apartment building has a fresh new look that replicates a scene from the game Donkey Kong.

Manuel Ramirez and Cecilia Ulibarri are the co-founders of the nonprofit Positive Street Art and two of the artists involved in the cool creation. Artists spent around 100 hours over a two-week period working on the Donkey Kong mural situated on the back of a building in Concord, New Hampshire.

The five-story mural features Mario wielding a hammer and Princess Pauline waiting to be rescued, with Donkey Kong looming in between the two characters. It’s a pretty spectacular rendering of the original Mario game, complete with bright colors and ladders jutting out of the building.

The idea for the artwork coincides with the nonprofit’s message, to “inspire a passion for the urban arts in a productive way and to build strong communities” through art, educational workshops and community events.

The project in particular excited Ramirez and Ulibarri more than a few previous works. “Not everyone is appreciative of this type of art, and we understand that but we are really excited about this project because we have never been asked to do something like this that was inspired by actual architecture as a baseboard,” Ulibarri said.

Ramirez and Ulibarri have worked on a number of projects in the area over the years, including painting concrete barriers set up to block off traffic as outdoor dining exploded in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
