Chill, It’s Just Football

Some people take football a little too seriously. Utah police arrested an engineering student who was accused of threatening to detonate a nuclear reactor on campus if the school’s football team didn’t win their game over the weekend.

The 21-year-old student of the University of Utah posted a threat on the anonymous social media platform Yik Yak. According to the police report, the student wrote that she would detonate the nuclear reactor located on the school’s campus if the football team did not win their game later that evening.

University of Utah police reported that the woman was in engineering at the university and attends class in the same building where the reactor is housed. She clearly “has knowledge of the nuclear reactor” so the threat was definitely wide open.

Thankfully, the Utes did win the game 35-7 over San Diego State and a crisis was avoided. It remains unclear as to how police were able to determine who was behind the post but they were able to find the right culprit. The woman was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on the second-degree felony charge of the threat of terrorism.
