Cockroaches Spoil Halloween for Suburban Street

Halloween fun was spoiled for one suburban neighborhood after a cockroach infestation took over a street.

Officials in Wyandotte, Detroit, said that the pests originated at a vacant home and were discovered after a tip from a trash hauler. Since the sighting, the roaches have been making their way to other homes in the neighborhood.

Out of precaution, sidewalks were closed on Halloween night on a portion of 20th Street. There’s no treat about bringing home a cockroach instead of candy. City engineer Greg Mayhew said that the Halloween ban would prevent “further roach migration.” The warning went on to say the choice was “in the best interest of the citizens.”

The city is currently trying to exterminate the cockroaches. Despite trying to get rid of the bugs, it’s noted that the endeavor “will take some time,” Mayhew said. City Councilman Todd Hanna said that council voted to shut down trick-or-treating to “prevent roaches from grabbing on to kids’ costumes” and entering other homes.

There was also concern that even if the trick-or-treaters were to kill some of the roaches by stepping on them, their eggs could survive and be tracked all over the neighborhood.
