Don’t Ask for Weed From a Border Guard

Crossing the border can be a scary situation for anyone, even people obeying the law. Border guards can often be intimidating, leaving many to stumble over their words.

One of the things you should avoid while crossing the border is talking to customs officers about drugs. Not a shocker but they’re going to be on high alert when the subject is skirted around.

A Michigan man named Kyle Schultz was trying to cross the border into Canada when he asked a Canadian customs agent for marijuana back in May 2020. He also said he had some marijuana and asked where he could buy more.

The 33-year-old admitted he was impaired and the officer made note that he was unstable on his feet, had glassy eyes and dilated pupils during the conversation. Schultz was taken to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service building and a urine test returned a positive test for cannabis.

The Muskegon resident pleaded guilty to impaired driving, which called for a $1,000 monetary penalty and a year-long driving prohibition. He now has a criminal record in Canada because of this incident.
