Delivering a set of puppies can bring all types of surprises. An Alabama dog breeder was shocked to see that his dog gave birth to a green-colored puppy.
Mark Ruffin owns Big Rajah Bullie in Helena, Alabama and said his pregnant dog was scheduled to have a C-section but was surprised when his prized pooch went into labour early. The mother had two puppies on her own before he realized she was in labour. Ruffin helped her deliver three more puppies at home before rushing to the animal hospital where his dog delivered three more via emergency C-section.
After the procedure, he noticed that one pup from the litter had green fur. “When I first saw the dog, I was like, I thought it was dirty or something because that was what the doctor said. She didn’t even know what it was,” Ruffin said.
Even after bathing the oddly colored newborn four times, he still couldn’t get rid of the color. Ruffin tried handing the puppy to its mother to see if she could clean it herself with its tongue but no such luck.
Apparently, the dog’s colour is a rare case of the pup coming in contact with biliverdin, a green pigment found in bile, as it mixes with the amniotic fluid from the mother dog’s placenta. Despite being rare, the condition usually affects very light-colored dogs and will fade over time.
It seems like for the time being, the pup, named Khloe, will remain green.
