Italian Town Looking to Fine Tourists for Taking Selfies

Many people enjoy taking selfies while on vacation but you might not be able to in one Italian town in the future. Portofino, Italy, is looking to fine tourists $300 for taking selfies in the area between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The town on the Italian Riviera is known as being one of the most colorful in the country. It has now introduced no-waiting zones to stop tourists from “lingering” in popular beauty spots from taking pictures.

The new rules have been imposed because these areas have become extremely busy, with many tourists gathering at peak times during the holiday season. The mayor of Portofino, Matteo Viacava, claimed that tourists were responsible for “anarchic chaos” because they block streets, which results in traffic jams when stopping to take pictures.

Luckily, it’s not the entire town that’s affected as the rules will be applied to two picturesque spots in particular that have become famous on Instagram. The measures came into effect at the beginning of April and will stay in place until October when the high tourist season comes to a close.
