You’ve heard of a wolf in sheep’s clothing before but what about a human in sheep’s clothing? An inmate launched a near-successful prison break disguised as a sheep.
José Luis Callisaya Diaz wrapped himself in sheepskin and crawled on all fours through a grassy area near Chonchocoro prison in La Paz, Bolivia, in order to escape. This turned out to be a baad idea as guards were able to catch up to him.
Diaz had apparently made it past security and was trying to break through an external wall at the jail on February 4, 2023, before officials noticed he wasn’t in his cell. The inmate, also known as El Arana — the spider — will now face disciplinary action over this attempted escape. Diaz was already serving a 15-year sentence for homicide before the prison break.
Director of the Penitentiary, Regime Juan Carlos Limpias, confirmed that officers from the San Pedro de Chonchocoro Penitentiary Center had stopped the escape of Diaz, “Who took advantage of the inclement weather to try to flee through one of the walls of the external perimeter of the prison.”
