Your luck can only go so far, that is, unless you’re one man who ended up winning a lottery jackpot after accidentally buying three tickets for the same drawing.
A 67-year-old man from Maryland landed a cool $150,000 after he purchased three tickets for the same Pick 5 draw. According to Maryland Lottery officials, the man forgot he had already bought tickets for the midday and evening Pick 5 drawings running from September 20 to 25.
He also made sure to buy a ticket for the Sept. 22 evening drawing but said his wife, unaware that he had already purchased tickets for the drawing twice, bought him a third ticket for the same drawing.
The stockpile of tickets and confusion was because the man was preparing to undergo surgery and wanted to make sure he had all his tickets already purchased beforehand. This turned out to be a pretty smart move on his part.
The man’s numbers — 5-1-3-5-9 — appeared in the draw, earning him a total prize of $150,000 from his three tickets. He said the winning number is based on his wife’s birthday. “The one time that I accidentally buy three tickets, the number hits three times. It was unbelievable,” he said.
Apparently, this man’s luck is still rubbing off from earlier in the month. On September 2, he scored a top prize in the midday Pick 4 drawing. He’s also previously won a big jackpot from a Pick 3 drawing.
The winner plans to share some of his new prize with his two daughters.
