Moose on the Loose After Being Freed From Fence

Moose are very large animals that don’t let much get in their way. On one occasion, a moose managed to get trapped in a fence and a group of quick-acting rescuers were able to free the animal before an injury occurred.

The Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police posted on Facebook about the incident. The department received a call around midnight about a moose stuck in a fence in Barkhamsted, Connecticut. Both Barkhamsted Fire and the Connecticut State Police Troop B responded to the call and found that the animal was not injured but simply unable to get its belly and rear legs over the fence.

Crews were able to cut off and remove one part of a panel of the fence, which allowed the animal to push the remaining obstruction to the ground with ease. “After about 15 seconds or so, the moose slowly walked away, which turned into a slow jog back to the edge of the reservoir disappearing into the darkness,” the Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police said.

There have been several moose sightings in the area, which has prompted the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to issue an advisory to motorists. Moose will often walk onto roadways without looking and can cause severe damage if struck.

According to DEEP, there are only around 100 moose in Connecticut but they tend to become more active during their breeding season through September and October.
