Scorpion Venom Heals as Medicine

Venom is not only a poisonous substance that kills with contact. Scorpion venom can kill or treat depending on the method of use. Turkish laboratory technicians contain and breed thousands of scorpions in plastic boxes to extract their venom for the production of medicine.

It’s a lucrative market that Turkish entrepreneurs profit from by catering to the growing demand for a multi-million-dollar overseas business. The venom gets exported to France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. The expensive extract produces cosmetics, painkillers, and antibiotics. According to Metin Orenler, the owner of the scorpion farm, one liter of the venom is worth $10 million.

“We both breed the scorpions themselves and also milk them,” Orenler said. “We freeze the venom that we obtain as a result of the milking we do, then we turn it into powder and sell them to Europe.”

Orenler’s farm has approximately 20,000 scorpions of the Androctonus Turkiyensis species, which is the black fat-tailed scorpion and is considered one of the most venomous scorpions in the world.

Scorpions are literally worth their weight in gold. “A single scorpion produces about two milligrams of venom and the lab is able to obtain about two grams of venom daily,” added Orenler.

There is no excuse for a poor living situation. Even poisonous substances pay well with the appropriate mindset and experience.
