The Champion of Fat Bear Week Crowned

In a world where we glorify being skinny as sexy, a new standard of beauty takes over the animal kingdom. Over the last week, contestants got judged for their chunky appearance and the largest weight takes the victory.

So who is the fan favorite for Katmai National Park & Preserve’s fattest bear? With over 68,000 votes in the finals, Bear 747 took the crown as the giant king in this competition. He was a prior contestant, marking this round as his second entry. 747 knocked down his competition 901, who came in with over 56,000 votes.

According to the details provided by the event sponsors, “Some of the largest brown bears on Earth make their home at Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Brown bears get fat to survive and Fat Bear Week is an annual tournament celebrating their success in preparation for winter hibernation.”

Katmai National Park released a congratulatory statement on Twitter with the competition winner: “The votes are in — you’ve decided to upgrade to fish class & fly w/ 747! 747 was deemed an order of magnitude more massive than 901, who experienced troubling tummy turbulence en route. 901 made a strong start in her 1st #FatBearWeek appearance. Expect big things in the future!”

The bears emerge as showstoppers, with the following cheering on their plump appeal. As a user replied saying he would risk his life for a hug, “I want to give her a hug. I don’t care about the consequences.”

As with all competitions, people hold strong opinions on the final verdict, “747 is obviously BIGGER but 901 is clearly FATTER and I will die on this hill.”

Our hearts are large enough for more than one giant — one user commented, “Yay 747!!!! I knew you could do it!! All of them are beautiful! Thank you for allowing us to see how they live! #FatBearWeek2022”
