Tree Frog Takes a Trip From the Dominican Republic to England

Discovering an animal in a bunch of bananas is probably the last thing anyone wants to do. A man discovered a tree frog in a bag of bananas after he arrived home from grocery shopping.

Iain Holloway had been shopping at the local Asda store for his family’s groceries. As he was unpacking the items after arriving at their Tamworth, Staffordshire, home, he found the animal chilling with the bananas.

“We were unpacking the shopping in the kitchen and my wife turned to me and said, ‘Look, there’s a frog in the bananas,’ and I said ‘Sorry, there’s a what in the bananas?'” Holloway said.

Holloway’s 12-year-old son was able to find some more information about the amphibian online, identifying it as a Hispaniolan common tree frog, which lives in the Dominican Republic. Conveniently, the island nation happened to be the same country that the bananas were shipped from.

“It was a complete surprise to see this little creature in our kitchen so far from home, and we’ve all had a bit of a chuckle about it since,” Holloway said.

Animal rescuers from RSPCA were alerted about the situation. Jonny Wood, an RSPCA animal rescue officer, arrived at the family’s home to take the 1.5-inch frog to receive specialist care.

“The little frog was bright and alert and has since been feeding well. The Holloway family did exactly the right thing by not touching the amphibian, given the uncertainty about what sort of frog we were dealing with,” Wood said.
