Woman Drives Car Into Lake Weeks After Passing Driving Test

Although minor bumps and scrapes are somewhat normal after passing your driving test, one woman managed to go above and beyond and drove her car into a lake just weeks after getting her license.

Leia Darnell passed her test with flying colors but plunged her Volkswagen Polo into a lake only eight weeks later. The 18-year-old purchased the vehicle in January 2022 in preparation for her test, only to lose control of the car at a bend.

Darnell and her boyfriend had been driving back home from a fireworks display in Oxford in dark and rainy conditions when the accident occurred. As the car approached a sharp bend, instead of following the road, Darnell launched the Polo over the riverbank and to its damp fate. Fortunately, both were not injured.

Thinking no one would believe her, Darnell captured clips from her stressful incident, which she shared on TikTok. In the video, she proudly showed off her new driver’s license but then cut to footage of the car submerged in the murky waters, as well as the car being dragged out of the water by a crane.

Although making light of the matter, Darnell said the incident had been eye-opening for her. “I remember us both looking at each other and thinking that was it. We are both so unbelievably lucky to have come out from the accident as we did. Every other possibility of what could have happened would have resulted in us being dead.

“The experience has really taught me to value everything in life as it has made me realize just how easily you can lose everything,” Darnell said.
