Giant Parade of 122 Hearses Breaks World Record

Funerals can be a cause for a celebration where death certificates are replaced with world records. Funerex Africa, which is a “trade expo and motoring experience for funeral professionals,” arranged the largest parade of hearses at the Kyalami Grand Prix Track, South Africa.

There were no sad tears only expressions of joy as they secured a place on the world stage. The event was a collaborative effort uniting workers in the funeral industry from all over Africa. The goal was to create positive partnerships while winning a world record together.

At the beginning of the event, the hearses and the drivers’ licenses were verified by a specialized driver training company called MasterDrive. If the vehicle and driver passed the verification process, a yellow wristband was placed on the driver’s wrist and a yellow sticker was placed on the car. The driver’s wristband would be numbered to keep track of the number of drivers entering the parade.

The goal was to reach 137 hearses but they fell a tad short of the target goal, reaching 123 vehicles. Due to technical difficulties, one of them was deducted from the grand total making it 122 hearses. It’s still an impressive line-up of vehicles with the traditional black hearses and modern white cars.

Although hearses evoke a heavy mood, the parade was meaningful for the workers in the funeral industry. The exhibition was a way to engage and unify the funeral industry.

No one left empty-handed. Participants went home with prizes at the end of the parade, such as hearse decks and graveside set-ups.

Why wait until you have a dead body to make plans? Visitors were encouraged to browse the latest models of hearses, coffins and different types of funeral services.
