KFC Germany in Hot Water After Failed Marketing Campaign

There are some holidays worth celebrating and others, not so much. Kentucky Fried Chicken’s German branch landed in hot water after a marketing campaign went horribly wrong.

KFC Germany apologized to its customers after inviting them to mark the anniversary of the Nazi Kristallnacht pogrom against Jews with “tender cheese” and crispy chicken. Kristallnacht, which means the “night of broken glass,” was the Nazi-led anti-Jewish pogrom held in 1938, that swept through towns across Germany and Austria, sending tens of thousands of Jewish men to concentration camps.

Many people received a notification from the fast food chain that read: “Memorial day of the Reich pogrom night: Treat yourself to more tender cheese with crispy chicken.”

A few minutes after the initial message was released, KFC sent a second notification stating: “Sorry, an error occurred. Due to a bug in our system, we sent an incorrect and inappropriate message through our app.”

The message caused outrage on social media, with many taking to the platforms to voice their anger against the chain restaurant. One person posted a screenshot of the notification with the caption: “No, I don’t want tender cheese with my crispy chicken on November 9.

KFC later said that the company’s internal processes would be checked immediately “so that this does not happen again.”
