Man Charged After Opening a Beer to Celebrate New Driver’s License

Drinking while driving is a big no-no and is something most people with common sense are aware of. An Ontario, Canada, man who only had his G2 license for 20 minutes got it suspended after opening a beer while driving to celebrate passing the test.

According to Caledon OPP, the 25-year-old Brampton man had just taken and passed his G2 license at the Orangeville testing centre in December 2023. “In celebration, the driver cracked a beer and decided to drive back to Brampton on Highway 10,” alleged Constable Ian Michel.

OPP Central Region posted about the incident on X saying that the driver had left the testing center 20 minutes before being stopped by police. The driver was heading south and “flew past an unmarked police vehicle” with an alleged registered speed of 31 miles per hour above the limit.

Police also said the driver was weaving in and around other vehicles in a “careless manner.” “I can’t even begin to understand why someone would think that drinking a beer in their vehicle while driving is a smart idea, let alone a novice driver who should be well versed on the rules of the road,” Michel said.

A Caledon officer pulled the driver over and discovered open alcohol in the vehicle. They also said that the driver registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above zero.

The man’s driver’s license was suspended for 30 days and he was charged with stunt driving, careless driving, novice driver with BAC above zero, driving with open liquor and several other document-related offences.
