Michigan Woman Finds Live Frog in Spinach Package

Prepping a nice meal doesn’t usually involve the surprise of a lifetime. A Michigan woman was shocked when she discovered a live frog in a sealed package of spinach she had purchased from the grocery store.

Amber Worrick bought the package of Earthbound Farms Organic Spinach from the Meijer store on Telegraph Road in Southfield, Michigan. Her daughter started to examine the package at home when she was startled by what was inside.

“My daughter was screaming, she was like ‘Oh my god, it’s a frog,’ and I was like, ‘What?'” Worrick said.

Worrick said she was relieved the frog was discovered before the spinach became part of the family’s meal. “Just thank god I didn’t eat the frog,” she said.

Worrick did end up returning the package to the store, which issued her a refund.

“The frog was carefully relocated to a new home outdoors,” Meijer said in a statement. “This product came from Earthbound Farms, one of the many farms Meijer partners with across the country to stock the freshest produce, delivered to our stores daily. We have provided the customer a refund.”

Taylor Farms, Earthbound Farms’ parent company, said an investigation has been opened into the incident.

“We are in direct communication with our customer partner and the consumer to express our apologies,” the company said. “Food safety and consumer experience are the top priorities for us and we are looking into how this happened and how this can be prevented in the future.”
