If people in South Korea have been frustrated with the barriers to getting their hands on international sex dolls, there is light at the end of the tunnel. South Korea has lifted a ban on the import of full-body sex dolls and it has been decided that the government cannot infringe on citizens’ private life.
Although there are no official laws banning the import of sex dolls, the customs process has seized the toys by citing that they “harm the country’s beautiful traditions and public moral.” The customs officers have been adopting a parenting role by filtering out which toys get into the public hands. They don’t want to corrupt the minds of public citizens, but here’s the thing, that’s not on them to decide.
The restrictive measures are a thing of the past now, as importers complained and escalated matters to court. The judge agreed with them and ordered customs to release the sex dolls. According to the verdict, they are used in “people’s private spaces and don’t undermine human dignity.”
The Korea Customs Service has begun enforcing an updated guideline for the import of life-size adult sex dolls. The office confirmed that it has reviewed recent court rulings and opinions from relevant government agencies including the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
Not all sex dolls make the cut. The customs service will still ban the import of child-like sex dolls or others embodying certain people.
Although the restrictions are loosening up, it’s not a smooth transition to welcome these dolls. Women’s rights and conservative organizations will speak up about the use of sex dolls leading to the sexual objectification of women.
Even though there might be some backlash, the customs service’s decision enables importers to get back their sex dolls held in government storage. Gradually more dolls will be circulating in public hands for people to engage in their wildest fantasies.
