Bankrupt Former Millionaire Pays $6.4 Million Debt Selling Sausages

Going from being a millionaire to owing money is a big step in the wrong direction. A bankrupt former millionaire in China has plans to pay off his $6.4 million debt by selling grilled sausages at a street food stall.

Tang Jian, a restauranteur in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, was once considered one of the most successful businessmen in the entire Zhejiang Province. By the age of 36, he already owned a chain of several restaurants and had amassed a huge fortune because of it.

Things took a turn in 2005 when Jian decided to invest a large sum of his money into a new industry. He refused to listen to anyone and started selling off his restaurants, houses and cars in order to pay for a project that was bleeding money. This backfired and left the man declaring bankruptcy and having over $6 million in debt.

To repay every cent of that debt, the now 52-year-old turned to selling grilled sausages on the street. When he started his venture, Jian didn’t have any money to open a restaurant so he settled for a street food stall he operates himself. There, he sells grilled sausages and shares his story with any customers who will listen.

“We are born with nothing. Why be scared of starting all over again?” Jian said. “We have to keep learning to face difficulties calmly and to march ahead with courage.”

He added: “Each of us lives a challenging life and encounters many difficulties but we must hold on to a spirit of never being defeated.”
