Forrest Gumps’ Box of Chocolates Sells for $25,000 at Auction

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! was shocked to find out that the infamous box of chocolates from the 1994 comedy-drama Forrest Gump didn’t actually include real chocolates.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! recently purchased the prop box of “chocolate” at auction for $25,000. The box was designed as a “Russell Stover Candies — The Gift Box” and features Hanks’ autograph on the cover.

However, chocolates were never used inside the box, not even when they were filming the movie. During filming, the box was actually filled with sand so that the weight would be easier for Hanks to keep on his lap. Although it was marked 23 ounces, the prop actually ended up weighing around four pounds.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! said the box of chocolates was acquired along with a few other movie props, including Darth Maul’s double-sided Lightsaber used in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Prince’s signature purple coat worn during the artist’s “Purple Rain” performances.
