Overturned Truck Releases Thousands of Bees Onto Highway

An accident on the highway can ultimately affect thousands of beings. Beekeepers were called to a Mississippi highway to assist with rounding up thousands of bees when the truck carrying their hives overturned.

The Adams County Emergency Management Agency said the truck overturned on the night of March 17, 2024, on Highway 61, in front of Merit Health in Natchez, Mississippi. Beekeepers from Adee Honey Farms in Woodville were called to the scene to help round up the bees that swarmed around the overturned truck where their hives were one being hauled.

Adams County EMA Director Brad Bradford said the scene was not cleared until 7 a.m. on March 18. “This was my first bee catastrophe,” Bradford said.

According to Bradford, the bees remained calm during the incident, mostly because it was after dark and the hives were covered in tarp. “The majority stayed in the vicinity after the wreck and were able to be contained in or near their hives,” Bradford said.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported due to the crash or the bee swarm that transpired afterwards.
